Being that CZ has a refractive index of 2.176, compared to a diamond’s 2.417, diamonds are therefore said to be brighter than CZ. Another difference between the two gems is that CZs are thermal insulators—meaning, they reduce the rate of heat transfer—whilst diamonds are among the most efficient thermal conductors—meaning, they allow heat to easily pass through them. Without testing the gems’ heat conductivity, it can be difficult to tell them apart.

Here are some tips for keeping your gems and jewelry looking fabulous for years to come. remember, even the hardest gemstone variety can be vulnerable to breakage if it has inclusions that weaken the crystal structure. Exercise common sense: if you have a ring set with a softer gem variety or an included stone, take it off before strenuous exercise. Even the hardest gem of them all, diamond, can shatter in two with a single well-placed blow. Never remove rings by pulling on the stone: that habit may result in a loose, then lost, gem.

Most importantly, store each piece of gemstone jewelry separately so that harder stones don’t scratch softer ones. Almost every gemstone is much harder than the metal it is set in. Gems can scratch the finish on your gold, silver or platinum if you throw your jewelry in a heap in a drawer or jewelry box.
Rings in particular tend to collect dust and soap behind the gem, particularly if you wear them all the time. You need to clean them regularly to let the light in so your gems can shine. To clean transparent crystalline gemstones, simply soak them in water with a touch of gentle dish soap. Use a bowl of water rather than the sink to eliminate the risk of anything going down the drain. If necessary, use a soft toothbrush to scrub behind the stone. A platinum scratch is different from white gold because it simply “plows” the metal instead of removing it.

Traditionally, jewelry manufacturers used platinum alloyed with metals from the platinum group metals (iridium, osmium, palladium, platinum, rhodium, and ruthenium). With the proper mix of these platinum group alloys, platinum becomes one of the hardest metals making it a strong and durable jewelry metal. Platinum will not rust or corrode and the platinum family metals make it hypoallergenic and ideal for persons with sensitive skin.

Federal Trade Commission (FTC) guidelines for platinum jewelry state that only items consisting of 950 part per thousand of pure platinum can be marked stamped “PLATINUM” or “PLAT” without more alloy information. From 750-950 Platinum, the platinum group metals must also be indicated. For example, PLAT900IRID for 10% Iridium alloy. Historically, the most common alloys in America were 95% Platinum with 5% Ruthenium or 5% Cobalt and 90% Platinum with 10% Iridium.

There is a misperception that the 950 platinum is better than the 900 platinum. However, pure platinum is very soft and the right alloy mix is what is important. Different alloys and different percentages produce better results for different jewelry purposes. Some alloy mixes work better for casting and some are better for handcrafting like bending the prongs over fragile diamond corners. Many artisans feel that PLAT900IRID is the best general-purpose alloy for diamond rings.

While platinum is best known for its use in jewelry, more than 60% of platinum is used for other industrial purposes such as catalytic converters in autos and pacemakers in the medical field. Because of its rarity and the rapidly increasing demand for this versatile metal, the price has soared in recent years.

The high price of platinum has caused some jewelry manufacturers to start using lower percentages of platinum and to use other alloy metals to lower the cost of the jewelry. Unfortunately, these new alloy mixes are reducing the very qualities that made platinum desirable. The new alloys produce more brittle platinum that is more susceptible to damage.

For example, metal that is stamped 585 Platinum is really only 58.5% pure platinum and 41.5% copper and cobalt with the result that it is more likely to crack, crater, discolor or irritate sensitive skin. Less scrupulous jewelry vendors remove the 585 stamp and complicate the situation, leading consumers to believe the metal is the traditional high quality platinum.

Historically the jewelry shopper did not have to be concerned about the purity of platinum because the alloy metals were in the platinum group the quality was uniform regardless of the particular alloy or percentage used.

Today’s jewelry shopper is at potential risk because the lower quality platinum looks the same as the higher quality platinum. While platinum looks similar regardless of the alloy, the weight of lower quality alloy mixes is lower because there is so much less of the dense platinum.

Currently there are no FTC guidelines for the new platinum alloys so it is up to the jeweler or appraiser to help the consumer determine if the platinum is well suited for its intended use. The consumer deserves a warning if sold lower quality platinum since it might not hold stones as well and is more susceptible to damage. However, do not expect the jeweler selling low quality platinum to point out this potential problem. As with any important purchases, it is up to the consumer to be knowledgeable and ask the right questions before making a purchase.

Tools Required

Wire cutter or flush cutter
Small wire jig
Round nose pliers
Flat nose pliers
Chain nose pliers
Small Ruler
Pin Vise or Automatic Wire Twister

Let's get started!


Step 1 Make a bundle with two 3-1/2 inch 21gauge gold-filled half hard wires on the inside and two 2-1/2 inch 21 gauge gold-filled half hard wires on the outside. Make about 6-7 wraps at the center of the bundle using 18g gold-filled half round half hard wire.

Step 2 Set up a jig with pegs in a row. The width of your gemstone should determine how many pegs you will need to set up. The pegs used in this pattern were about 3/16 of an inch in diameter. Each curl will consume about 1 inch of wire.

Step 3 Twist the complete length of the wire with a wire twister. Estimate how many curls you will need to border the width of your gemstone. Start from the center and measure outwards. Make loops for the complete length of the bottom of your gemstone. Again you will have to estimate how many loops you will need for your gemstone by holding the stone against the loops.

Step 4 After curling the wire, lay the wire around the gemstone. Next place the bundle of wires (with the cut edges of half round towards the back of the gemstone) onto the back of the gemstones.

Step 5 Using your chain nose pliers pull one of the upper wires towards the front of the gemstone and bend it around to form a prong. Bend the second wire around the gemstone to form a prong on the other wide. Clip off the excess wire to make each prong equal in size and adjust the position of the prongs to make them equidistant from the top of the pendant. Press the prongs close to the gemstone.

Step 6 Next grasp the two lower wires, center the wires, make them come through two circles and bend them around the front of the gemstone. Clip off the excess wire and press the prongs flat to the gemstone. Make prongs from the remaining two lower wires.

Step 7 Using your flat nose pliers, bend the two upper bail wires forward with a 90 degree angle towards the pendant and a second 90 degree angle upwards.

Step 8 Your wires should look like the picture.

Step 9 Using the large part of the jaws of your round nose pliers or bail making pliers, bend the bail wires toward the back of the pendant about 3/4 inch from the top of the pendant.

Step 10 Clip the bail wires to make them all the same length Clip them right above the top of the pendant.

Step 11 Using a 2 inch length of 21 gauge square half hard wire, wrap the bail wires about 4 times. Clip off the excess wrap wire. Make sure that the cut ends of the wrap wires are on the backside of the pendant.

Step 12 To make a dangle, estimate how long the dangle will be and cut the wire about 3/4 inch longer than the dangle. You can make many variations with several different combinations of beads. In this pattern I worked with 13x4mm malachite tube beads and 4mm gold-filled beads. Grasp the end of the wire close to the end of the jaws of your round nose pliers. Turn the wire around the jaws to form a complete loop.

Step 13 Grasp the loop with your round nose pliers and bend the loop backwards in order to center the loop over the wire.

Step 14 Your loop should look like the picture.

Step 15 String the beads onto the wire and make a similar loop on the opposite end. Clip excess wire to make the loop fit right against the top bead. Using your flat nose pliers open the loop by bending the end. String the dangle onto the pendant and close the loop.

This is a complete neckpiece (pendant and beads) I did some time back. I used the design from Introduction to wire sculpture volume one. But I accented with some small 3/4mm fresh water pearls. Now when you do this make your sculpture first then add the pearls where they seem to fit. That location is subject on each sculpture that's why you make the piece first and add the accent pearls second.

For the beads I used commercial grade 8mm amethyst gemstone beads enclosed with silver Bali beads and a silver Bali catch in the rear. You could use pewter and get almost the exact same look.

I used 21 gauge dead soft sterling round wire, a 40x30 purple onyx cab and very thin round silver wire to run the pearls on. You could use 24, 26, or 28 gauge. wire depending on the size hole in your pearls and they will vary quite a bit.

The Los Angeles Times reports that a man wearing a hooded sweatshirt and gloves entered through the unlocked front door of Hilton’s Sherman Oaks home at 5 a.m. Friday morning and ransacked her bedroom before fleeing with the icy loot and other personal belongings.

Sources told the Times that Paris was not home at the time - even though she was photographed the previous night at several LA night spots.

Authorities do not believe the Hilton robbery was connected to burglaries that have beset the Westside and Hollywood Hills lately, costing many celebs hundreds of thousands of dollars in jewelry and other valuables.

In those incidents two or three men wearing ski masks and gloves hit more than 70 homes usually at night and often on weekends. Some of the victims of these gloved intrusions include former Paramount Pictures chief Sherry Lansing and her Oscar-winning director husband, William Friedkin, Los Angeles Clippers basketball star Cuttino Mobley, Duran Duran guitarist John Taylor and his wife, Juicy Couture President Gela Nash-Taylor, and country music stars Tim McGraw and Faith Hill.

Jewelry thieves seem to be making a comeback these days, with the shocking Harry Winston robbery in Paris making headlines, and the economy perhaps forcing others to put their sticky fingers where they don’t belong. Or maybe it’s Hollywood copycats paying homage to their most famous incarcerated gloved criminal, one Mr. O.J. Simpson?

Regardless, celebs like Hilton might want to take extra security precautions until the crime wave passes. Like, say, locking her door?
